Villa-Lobos, Heitor

Heitor Villa-Lobos(1887-1959), Brazilian composer, studied music from his father first, then went to Paris for further study. Returning to Brazil in 1930, he became an important official in Public Education implementing reforms of music instruction in San Paulo state, and founding the Superintendency of Musical and Artistic Education. He founded a Ministry Education Conservatory and Brazilian Academy of Music. He composed 12 symphonies, 17 string quartets, and various chamber music.
